Back
to Riverne! What happened to Riverne Site
#A02? Makes you wonder why they have the 01 on there at all, doesn't
it? But we’re on Site B now, and the level cap finally went up to
50. It’s
not artifact armor yet, but you’re getting closer.
Out of all the CoP missions, this one is the most dependant on having
mage jobs. SMNs, RDMs, and BLMs are always useful on this mission.
Since a lot of the strategy involves keeping the boss slept and waking
it up with powerful coordinated attacks, melees that do damage over
time with their weapons will be significantly less useful. The upside
is that if a melee can ever get past this mission, they should be able
to take their melee job all the way to the end. So keep at it!
(update: some people have misinterprited this as me saying it's
impossible for melee parties to win. You can, okay? Bring more meds,
workout a skillchain, and follow the general tips and you certainly can
win. Please stop saying I hate you guys!)
Preparations for Riverne B
When you are on chapter 4, an Elvaan in the
safehold starts
wanting Hippogryph Tailfeather for his mad scheme. See the Safehold
guide for his location and more details. Every two that you
give him
net you a Mistmelt, the special item for this BC. You can buy them
(tailfeathers) out of bazaars, but they’re almost always
overpriced. I
recommend going into Riverne B and killing some Hippogryphs for the
feathers.
You might get lucky and get a (head)feather too, which sells very
nicely. And
you do need to kill Pyrodrakes again, but only need one scale. If you
have any
left over from Riverne A, you’re set on this part.
Farming:

- Obtained: drop off of all wyverns in Riverne Site A or B. Cannot
be
bought or traded; must be farmed.
- Number needed: one
- Optional or mandatory: mandatory
- Use: pass through Unstable Displacements.
- Notes: one scale is traded to the displacement to allow passage
for a short time. After trading the scale activate the dispacement and
choose to pass through. Anyone in or outside a party can pass through,
but the displacement will become unusable again after a short time. A
new scale is needed for each displacement. At minimum, one are
necessary to reach Monarch Linn.
Farming:
Hippogryph Tailfeather
- Obtained: drop off of all hippogryphs in Riverne Site B. Can be
traded but not sold on the auction house. You may be able to find some
in bazaars.
- Number needed: two per mismelt, several mistmelts recomended
- Optional or mandatory: optional, highly recomended
- Use: traded for mistmelts in the quest Fly High
- Notes: Ouryu is far more dangerous in the sky. Using a mistmelt
will force him to the ground. Two hippogryph tailfeathers are necessary
to complete the quest Fly High given by Ferchinne in the Tavnazian
Safehold. This quest can be completed multiple times to obtain many
mistmelts.
Mistmelts are EX but not RARE, so someone can carry multiple and you
can
designate someone
as the mistmelter. Mistmelt also sounds like a very good cheese
sandwich at a
deli, but maybe it’s just me.
Let's Roc!

He he he. Lesser Roc! It's like Roc, only lesser!
Okay,
sorry. They don't aggro.
Much like Riverne A, once you get what you want
you can just avoid enemies all the way to Monarch Linn. The route is as
follows:

- dark green dot = portal along the route
- red dot = unstable portal along the route
- blue dot = portal leading somewhere you don't want to go
- purple dot = unstable portal leading somewhere you don't want to
go
- yellow dot = portal leading to the map quest moblins (don't worry
about this now)
- orange dot = portal leading to Bahamut battle (again, don't
worry, WAAAY in the future)
Because it's hard to read here is a text account
of the route:
After zoning in take the single displacement on
your island at (M-9). You'll then be on the main island in Riverne B.
This is a good place to farm the lowest level Pyrodrakes and Nimbus
Hippogryphs to get as many tailfeathers and the one dragon scale as
you'll need. Once you've traded in your feathers for mistmelts back in
the Safehold, continue north to the displacement at (J-7). The next
island is also in (J-7) and has two displacements. Choose the one to
the northwest. Head west to the single unstable displacement you'll
need to use at (H-6) and get your party through. Continue west to the
displacement at (F-6), then head due south to one at (E-7). The single
displacement south at (E-8) leads you into Monarch Linn.

Unlike A, you need sneak at some points in Riverne B. The molbor mob
Lunantishee detects with sound so use oils as necessary. Pyrodrakes and
Ignidrakes detect with sight. Nitro Clusters detect with both sight and
magic so use your powders and oils around these guys. Nimbus
Hippogryphs and Strato Hippogryphs detect with sight and have true
sight so avoid their gaze. If you're paying attention, sneaking across
these islands is a simple task and there is no reason to fight any of
the later monsters at all. Head into Monarch Linn to contfront your
true foe.
Fatty Dragon:

Ouryu gives lots of people trouble, and for good
reason.
He’s strong, resistant, and generally nasty. On the ground he has
several AoE
forward moves, and in the sky he has tons of nasty damaging AoEs. He is
an
earth-based dragon and casts Stoneskin and and stone damage magic a
lot.
Basically, he’ll shred you all if given half a chance.
The key is not giving him the chance. Fortunately,
he’s
pretty predictable if you’re knowledable and have the mistmelts.
Open with a Dispel on his starting
Stoneskin,
and if
you’re using
the two-SMN Astral Flow method, Invincible and two Astral Flows. Keep
that tank
alive and avoid his frontal AoEs. Don’t stand behind him, as he can use
a tail
move too that can wipe your party in one hit. When he is at about 15%
damage, he’ll take to the skies. He’s
worse
up there, so this would be a good time to use a Mistmelt. A Mistmelt
forces him
to the ground. He'll also land if you hurt him enough, but if you hurt
him to land him, he actually uses a move called Touchdown
that
does light (about 100) AoE damage. If you use a Mistmelt he doesn't use
Touchdown.

At this point most strategies involve sleeping
him. You
can’t sleep him in the sky. When he’s sleeping, you can rest too. He
builds
sleep immunity, but at the beginning he’ll be out for a minute or so.
Plenty of
time to rest for a little MP. If you're still going strong, however, no
need to sleep him.
The chaos and the death begins when you have a
party that
can’t deal damage in bursts. Two SMNs can Astral Flow and Garuda him to
death.
Black Mages can cast Freeze while he’s sleeping to hit him hard. He
wakes up,
gets in the sky, gets mismelted, and is slept again. If your party is
unable to
deal blasts in bursts like this, it will be harder, so expect to need
more meds
to stay alive. Melees CAN do it, however. Work out a skillchain and
position yourselves to avoid his frontal and rear moves.

Garuda is your best friend here. She can actually
tank Ouryu
since she takes so little damage from his earth-based attacks. And of
course
she can deal tremendous damage with her Aerial Blast.

Strategy tips:
- Dispel Stoneskin every chance you get.
- Ouryu is much stronger in the air than on the ground. The AoEs
come
fast and are damaging. Get him down as
fast as possible using a Mistmelt.
- Ouryu can be slept, but only on the ground.
- Ouryu's 2-hour ability is Invincible, which he uses at a a mostly
random time.
- Lightly-armored characters (such as mages) should stay to the
side of
him to
avoid his frontal and rear attacks
- Dealing damage in bursts (such as two BLMs casting Freeze at the
same
time, or an Aerial Blast and an Eagle Eye Shot) allows you to keep
Ouryu slept and only wake him up when you're
ready to deal a powerful set of attacks.
- Garuda is mostly immune to Ouryu and will do great damage with
her
2-hour.
- At 30% life he will give up
BCNM-Specific Item

- Obtained: obtained through the quest Fly High in the Tavnazian
Safehold (can also be bought off the auction house)
- Number recomended: at least three
- Optional or mandatory: optional, highly recomended
- Use: forces Ouryu to land
- Notes: Ouryu has several poweful AoEs in the air. Also, all melee
attacks will miss and he cannot be slept while he's flying. To keep the
battle in your favor, use a mistmelt every time he takes flight.
If you can bring him down to about 30% health, the
battle
will awkwardly end with your victory. Good job! This mission is hard as
heck.
You’ll be in the clear for a while.

At this point I joined a static
party of WHM (me,
Erecia),
BLM (Brimah), RDM (Koukla), PLD (Brainbender), SMN (Dank), and RNG
(Ebibant) My
strategies will be based on this pretty balanced team from here out. If
you're
not in a static by this point yourself, well, get in one. It is
increasingly
more difficult to find people without statics after 4-2.
