Brief synopsis:
|
A battle with
the Wyrmking himself!
|
“Storms of Fate” could be called Chains of Promathia mission
9-1 by the creative. Though this is a quest, it follows directly from
the
events in the final mission of the game’s storyline. It would seem that
the
Wyrmking Bahamut is none too happy with how things turned out and has
challenged you to a fight. Of course, being the glory-driven
adventurers that
you are, how can you resist?
Bahamut’s Call
In order to get this quest you MUST have completed every
single cutscene in CoP. This includes the last two in Tavnazian
Safehold and
Lufaise Meadows viewable after obtaining your CoP ring. If you have not
viewed
those you will be unable to get this quest and will probably be very
confused.
Anyway, once you have seen it all, approach the Archduke’s palace in
Ru’Lude
gardens.

This is not a mission; it’s a Jeuno quest and will show up
there accordingly. Once you and 17 of your allies have gotten this
quest head
over to good old Riverne – Site #B01. You will see another cutscene
when
checking the gate that leads into Cape Riverne.

The battle with Bahamut is uncapped but Riverne – Site#B01
is still at 50. You can run through naked if you’ve already gotten a
scale. If
not, farm the drakes until getting one. You only need a single dragon
scale for
one unstable displacement up ahead. Once you have it, go ahead and run
through
naked. You’ll still want oils and powders (or crafty castings of sneak
and
invisible) to make it through. The
orange dot on the route map is your
destination. This Unstable Displaement is green and requires no
dragon
scale to
open. Check it for a cutscene, and again gives you the option to enter
the
battleground “Storms of Fate” Gather underneath and enter!

The Wyrmking’s Wrath
A lot of elitist linkshells call this battle “a
joke” and
brag about how they won with virtually no deaths. They’re almost
certainly talking
about their second run. Though it’s not difficult to win once you’re
used to
how he fights, on their first try I can easily see Bahamut chewing
people up. Probably because it happened to me.
Entering the battleground removes your level 50
restriction
and heals you to full HP. Of course, you’ll want to buff up before the
fight
with post-50 spells. If, perish the thought, you fail, you will be
placed back
into 50-cap Riverne right at the displacement you enter. Though any
Reraise you
had on will still work obviously you will only be able to get Raise 1.
The good
part is that you can try the battle immediately again if you perish in
combat.
But enough about that.

Bahamut has two real tricks. One, he’s got the patented “stronger
magic only monsters use that players will never get.” Fire V, Firaga
IV, and…
Flare II. Of course he’s immune to silence so you’ll want to keep
Barfira up on
everyone at all times to avoid these completely deadly fire spells. The
second
of his awesomely powerful moves is Mega Flare. Fans of the previous
Final Fantasy
games know this is a powerful, non-elemental magic attack. What this
means is
that, though Shell will prevent some damage, no specific bar-spell like
Barfira
will further reduce the pain. Mega Flare is a directional AoE attack.
If you
can keep the Wyrmking facing only your tanks while your mages, healers,
and other
melees stay to the sides or behind him, than they will avoid the damage
entirely. Mega Flare does about 600-800 damage. Before he uses it
Bahamut will
always talk trash in /say so that’s your last warning to get out of
range.

Bahamut’s special “2-hour” is Giga Flare, a version of Mega Flare that
does
about double the damage. For those of you who are bad at math we’re
talking
well over 1000 damage here. It’s still a directional AoE but that much
damage
is highly dangerous to even the best prepared tanks. Be ready for
Bahamut to
unleash this awesome move at around 10% life (90% damage). Or be
unprepared
like us on our first run, above.

getting killed. Shut up. :-P

Strategy tips:
- Tank Bahamut straight up. No kiting. You need to control which
direction he is facing.
- Keep Barfira on as much of your alliance as possible.
- Bahamut cannot be silenced though he can be stunned.
- Keep your softer characters to the sides of Bahamut to avoid Mega
Flare
- Bahamut will always talk in /say before using Mega or Giga Flare.
Consider it your last warning to clear out.
- Giga Flare will strike when Bahamut is at about 10% life
remaining. Tank with godly armor or not, this thing HURTS. Have your
healers at the ready.

My strike force got the second
kill of this beast on our server and about the 5th kill on all servers
total, making us some of the first people in the world to fight and
defeat the Wyrmking. People from 5 major linkshells, both NA and JP,
and some people without a major linkshell like myself, came together in
the name of battle on short notice and worked together to defeat this
monster. Proof that as long as claim isn't an issue it's possible for
linkshells to get along!
It’s only about a ten
minute fight although Bahamut’s attacks hit fast and hard. When you
defeat him
you obtain the key item “Whisper of the Wyrmking.” My best agents
(mainly me)
scoured the world for what to do with this thing; the results are
somewhat
shocking.
At this point you have two paths open to you. Your first victory over
Bahamut unlocks two additional quests and you can do both if you wish.
You can continue your conflict against the wyrms and proceed to the
Ouryu battle below. Or you can move onward to the mysterious CoP
mission 8-5. For Ouryu and the rematch against Bahamut, read on.. For
CoP mission 8-5, click here. You
do not have to beat the Ouryu or the second Bahamut to proceed towards
Apocalypse Nigh! Just the first one!
No Backseat for Ouryu

We now pass past the realm of my knowledge; I put this up
only because enough people have confirmed it and more keep asking about
it.
Ouryu Cometh is a battle that has been in the game far before all this
Bahamut
stuff was added. It is an 18-person uncapped fight against the wyrm
Ouryu, that
nasty dragon from mission 4-2 all grown up this time. In order to enter
this
fight you trade a Cloud Evoker, obtainable as a random drop by
high-level ENM
fights, to an Unstable Displacement in Riverne – Site#A01 and enter an
uncapped
area similar to the Bahamut battle above.

Ouryu alone is ridiculously powerful, hitting hard and fast. He also
has four worms and several water and stone elementals backing him up.
Both the worms and the elementals respawn though can be slept and
silenced for a time. You have one hour to take down this mighty wrym.
As you can see from these screenshots I've been to this BC, but we only
got him down to a mesely 20%. This fight is hardcore. Why am I talking
about this at all?
Because successfully
defeating the mighty Ouryu always nets you a Monarch Orb. This orb
allows you
to return to Bahamut and show him what’s for.
Hail to the Wyrmking
This fight is so far beyond the reach of confirmed information that
details are highly sketchy at best. I’ll likely start more rumors with
this
than I put to rest. Some sources say 18 people enter this next fight,
others
suggest a whopping 64 are possible. Two things seems to be certain; you
can
only fight Bahamut by trading a Monarch Orb to that (E-7) displacement
in
Riverne B and only adventurers with the Whisper of the Wyrmking can
enter this
second battle.
Bahamut stops pulling his punches in the rematch. He seems
to be able to use Giga Flare at will. Even worse, he summons weaker
versions
Vrtra, Tiamat, and Jormugand to his side similar to how Kirin
calls his mini-gods. The horrors!
Bahamut drops a random number of his items when he’s
defeated. There are four EX “Bahamut items”: a scythe, a staff, a mask,
and a
pair of hose. If you’re a DRK, SMN, PLD, or MNK you will likely be very
happy.
SE says “ha ha” to every other job. If you’re a WHM by now you’re used
to
having absolute crap for RARE/EX items anyway. It’s all about the glory
anyway.
The GLORY!
More
details if/when I get past this fight. We’ll see.
